Marrakech to Chefchaouen Desert Tour — Overview

This 5-day trip from Marrakech to Chefchaouen via the Sahara desert is one of the most complete Morocco tours available as a one-way route. You leave Marrakech heading south through the High Atlas Mountains, spend two days in and around the Merzouga desert, drive north to Fes for a full guided day, and finish in the blue city of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains.

Day one heads south through the High Atlas to the Dades Valley. Day two crosses Todra Gorge to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes for the sunset camel ride and a night at a luxury desert camp. Day three drives north through the Ziz Valley oasis and the cedar forest to Fes. Day four is a full guided tour of the Fes medina in the morning before driving to Chefchaouen. Day five is a flexible drop off — Tangier, Casablanca, Marrakech, or Fes depending on your onward travel.

Chefchaouen is approximately 580 km from Marrakech by road — too far to visit as a day trip from Marrakech. This 5-day tour is the right way to connect the two cities while seeing the best of what Morocco has between them.

Highlights of the 5-Day Tour from Marrakech to Chefchaouen

  • Cross the High Atlas Mountains on day one and walk through Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage site of Berber kasbahs — before the overnight in the Dades Valley canyon
  • Sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi sand dunes on day two — night at a luxury desert camp inside the Sahara with Berber music and no light pollution
  • Full guided day in Fes on day four — the ancient medina, tanneries, and the most complex souks in Morocco
  • Drive to the blue city of Chefchaouen on day four afternoon — blue-washed narrow streets in the Rif Mountains
  • Flexible drop off on day five — Tangier, Casablanca, Marrakech, or Fes based on your onward plans
  • Five days of authentic Moroccan experience across four completely different landscapes

Itinerary of the 5-Day Marrakech to Chefchaouen Tour

The route covers five distinct landscapes — the High Atlas and canyon country on day one, the Sahara desert on day two, the cedar forest and Fes on day three, the Fes medina and Chefchaouen on day four, and the flexible departure on day five.

Day 1 | Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley (5 hours)

You leave Marrakech airport area early and head south into the High Atlas Mountains. Tizi n’Tichka pass sits at 2,260 metres — the panoramic views back toward Marrakech are clear on a good morning.

The road descends into the pre-Saharan south. The first stop is Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage site of traditional Berber towers above a dry riverbed that has appeared in Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and dozens of other productions. Your driver-guide leads the full circuit through the ksar. No entry fee required.

After Ait Ben Haddou the road continues through Ouarzazate and east along the Dades River into the picturesque canyon. You arrive at your riad in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon. Dinner and breakfast included.

320 km  ·  approx. 5 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Dades Valley

Day 2 | Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Tinghir → Merzouga → Erg Chebbi (4 hours)

The morning starts in the Dades canyon. You drive east through Tinghir and into Todra Gorge — a dramatic gorge with limestone walls rising to 300 metres and narrowing to about 10 metres at the tightest point. Walk the base before 11am for the best light.

From Todra the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain toward Rissani and south to Merzouga. The lush palm groves of the oasis give way to open desert as you approach the dunes. By late afternoon the Erg Chebbi sand dunes appear on the left.

You reach Merzouga in time for the sunset camel ride. The camel trek into the dunes takes about 45 minutes. The luxury desert camp is inside the Erg Chebbi dunes — private tent, en-suite bathroom, hot water, air conditioning. Dinner at the camp, Berber music around the fire, and a sky with no light pollution. Breakfast included.

220 km  ·  approx. 4 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Luxury desert camp, Erg Chebbi

Day 3 | Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Ifrane → Cedar Forest → Fes (9 hours)

Watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes from the dune ridge before heading north. The longest drive of the tour. The road goes through Erfoud and into the Ziz Valley — a long oasis of lush palm groves lined with old Berber villages cutting through the desert toward Azrou.

From the Ziz Valley the road climbs into the Middle Atlas. You pass through Ifrane — a mountain town at 1,650 metres — and through the cedar forest near Azrou where Barbary monkeys sit in the trees along the roadside.

You arrive in Fes in the early evening. Overnight in a riad in the medina. Breakfast included.

490 km  ·  approx. 9 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Fes

Day 4 | Fes Guided Medina Tour → Chefchaouen (3 hours)

A licensed local guide meets you at your riad for a morning guided tour of one of the world’s great medieval cities. The Fes medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site — the guide covers the main souks, Al-Qarawiyyin University, the tanneries viewed from the leather shop terraces above, and the bustle of the ancient alleyways that most visitors miss without direction.

After the guided tour you leave Fes and head northwest toward Chefchaouen. The drive takes about three hours through the Rif Mountains. You arrive in the blue city in the afternoon and can take a leisurely stroll through the picturesque narrow streets and the central plaza before dinner.

Chefchaouen is a complete change of pace from everything that came before — quiet, photogenic, and unlike any other destination in Morocco. Overnight in a charming riad. Breakfast included.

approx. 190 km  ·  approx. 3 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Chefchaouen

Day 5 | Chefchaouen → Drop Off (flexible)

The final day is flexible. Based on your onward travel plans, the driver takes you to your chosen drop off point:

  • ·Tangier — approx. 2 hours from Chefchaouen. Best for ferry connections to Spain
  • ·Casablanca — approx. 4 hours. Best for international flights from Mohammed V Airport
  • ·Fes — approx. 3 hours. Best for flights from Fes Saiss Airport

Why This Marrakech to Chefchaouen Tour

Most Morocco tours that cover this combination run as shared group departures or split the booking between multiple operators — one for the desert section, another for the north. This tour covers the full route in one booking with one vehicle and one driver-guide for all five days.

The day four Fes guided medina tour is included — not an optional extra. The licensed local guide covers the tanneries, souks, and the ancient medina streets that most travellers walk past without understanding. That knowledge is part of the price on this tour.

Day five flexibility is also worth mentioning. Most fixed tours drop you in one city. This tour drops you wherever you need to be for your onward journey — Tangier for the ferry, Casablanca for international flights, Fes or Marrakech for regional connections.

We recommend this tour for travellers who want the desert, the imperial cities, and the blue city of Chefchaouen in one connected trip without any logistical gaps.

Know Before You Go

Day three is the long drive

Merzouga to Fes is 490 km and approximately 9 hours. This is the only long drive on the tour — every other day is between 3 and 5 hours. Leave the desert camp early on day three. A 6am departure with a lunch stop along the route gets you to Fes by early evening.

The camel trek

The sunset camel ride on day two takes about 45 minutes into the Erg Chebbi dunes. If you prefer not to ride, a 4×4 transfer to the desert camp is available at no extra cost. Let your guide know before arriving in Merzouga.

Day five drop off

Confirm your day five destination at the time of booking. Tangier and Fes are the most straightforward — 2 to 3 hours from Chefchaouen. Casablanca is about 4 hours. Marrakech is about 7 hours — a long final day but doable if your flight is in the evening.

Fes medina on day four

Stay with your licensed local guide throughout the morning tour. The medina has over 9,000 alleyways. The tanneries are viewed from the leather shop terraces above — you will be offered mint on arrival because of the smell from the pits below.

Chefchaouen

The streets of Chefchaouen are best in the early morning before 9am and in the late afternoon. If you arrive on day four in the early afternoon you have time to relax and enjoy the blue medina at a gentle pace before dinner.

Best time of year

March to May and October to November. Desert temperatures at Erg Chebbi sit between 18 and 28°C in these months. The Rif Mountains around Chefchaouen are green and clear. July and August are possible but day three is a long drive in the heat.
