Marrakech to Chefchaouen Desert Tour

You leave Marrakech airport area early and head south into the High Atlas Mountains. Tizi n’Tichka pass sits at 2,260 metres — the panoramic views back toward Marrakech are clear on a good morning.

The road descends into the pre-Saharan south. The first stop is Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage site of traditional Berber towers above a dry riverbed that has appeared in Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and dozens of other productions. Your driver-guide leads the full circuit through the ksar. No entry fee required.

After Ait Ben Haddou the road continues through Ouarzazate and east along the Dades River into the picturesque canyon. You arrive at your riad in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon. Dinner and breakfast included.

The morning starts in the Dades canyon. You drive east through Tinghir and into Todra Gorge — a dramatic gorge with limestone walls rising to 300 metres and narrowing to about 10 metres at the tightest point. Walk the base before 11am for the best light.

From Todra the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain toward Rissani and south to Merzouga. The lush palm groves of the oasis give way to open desert as you approach the dunes. By late afternoon the Erg Chebbi sand dunes appear on the left.

You reach Merzouga in time for the sunset camel ride. The camel trek into the dunes takes about 45 minutes. The luxury desert camp is inside the Erg Chebbi dunes — private tent, en-suite bathroom, hot water, air conditioning. Dinner at the camp, Berber music around the fire, and a sky with no light pollution. Breakfast included.

Watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes from the dune ridge before heading north. The longest drive of the tour. The road goes through Erfoud and into the Ziz Valley — a long oasis of lush palm groves lined with old Berber villages cutting through the desert toward Azrou.

From the Ziz Valley the road climbs into the Middle Atlas. You pass through Ifrane — a mountain town at 1,650 metres — and through the cedar forest near Azrou where Barbary monkeys sit in the trees along the roadside.

You arrive in Fes in the early evening. Overnight in a riad in the medina. Breakfast included.

A licensed local guide meets you at your riad for a morning guided tour of one of the world’s great medieval cities. The Fes medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site — the guide covers the main souks, Al-Qarawiyyin University, the tanneries viewed from the leather shop terraces above, and the bustle of the ancient alleyways that most visitors miss without direction.

After the guided tour you leave Fes and head northwest toward Chefchaouen. The drive takes about three hours through the Rif Mountains. You arrive in the blue city in the afternoon and can take a leisurely stroll through the picturesque narrow streets and the central plaza before dinner.

Chefchaouen is a complete change of pace from everything that came before — quiet, photogenic, and unlike any other destination in Morocco. Overnight in a charming riad. Breakfast included.

Confirm your drop off preference when you book

Merzouga to Fes is 490 km and approximately 9 hours. This is the only long drive on the tour — every other day is between 3 and 5 hours. Leave the desert camp early on day three. A 6am departure with a lunch stop along the route gets you to Fes by early evening.

The sunset camel ride on day two takes about 45 minutes into the Erg Chebbi dunes. If you prefer not to ride, a 4×4 transfer to the desert camp is available at no extra cost. Let your guide know before arriving in Merzouga.

Confirm your day five destination at the time of booking. Tangier and Fes are the most straightforward — 2 to 3 hours from Chefchaouen. Casablanca is about 4 hours. Marrakech is about 7 hours — a long final day but doable if your flight is in the evening.

Stay with your licensed local guide throughout the morning tour. The medina has over 9,000 alleyways. The tanneries are viewed from the leather shop terraces above — you will be offered mint on arrival because of the smell from the pits below.

The streets of Chefchaouen are best in the early morning before 9am and in the late afternoon. If you arrive on day four in the early afternoon you have time to relax and enjoy the blue medina at a gentle pace before dinner.

March to May and October to November. Desert temperatures at Erg Chebbi sit between 18 and 28°C in these months. The Rif Mountains around Chefchaouen are green and clear. July and August are possible but day three is a long drive in the heat.

Chefchaouen is approximately 580 km north of Marrakech by road and about 7 hours driving in one go. It sits in the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco close to the Mediterranean coast. The most practical way to travel between them and see the country in between is a multi-day tour like this one.

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are the most popular desert destination for Morocco tours. The Dades Valley and Todra Gorge are the most popular canyon stops. Ait Ben Haddou is the most visited kasbah. Fes and Marrakech are the two imperial cities that bookend most desert tour itineraries.

Solo travel on this route is possible but complicated. The desert section has no reliable public transport. Shared tours exist and are the most practical option for solo travellers on a budget. Private tours for a solo traveller are more expensive per person but give full flexibility. The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are the highest in the country. The Fes medina on day four is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. Chefchaouen on day four afternoon is the blue city in the Rif Mountains.

The route is safe and well-travelled. The main practical considerations are the long day three drive and navigation in the Fes medina, best done with your licensed local guide.
