Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour 4 Days — Overview

Most people fly into Marrakech and out of Fes. This Morocco tour is built for exactly that. Four days, one direction, no backtracking.

The route goes south over the High Atlas Mountains, east through the canyon country to the Sahara desert, two nights near the Merzouga dunes, then north through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas cedar forests to Fes.

Day one ends in the Dades Valley. Day two reaches the desert camp at Erg Chebbi after a sunset camel trek. Day three is a full 4×4 excursion in the Merzouga desert. Day four is the drive north to Fes.

Four days. Two cities. The Sahara in between.

4 Days Trip from Marrakech to Fes — Itinerary

The route covers four completely different landscapes. The High Atlas on day one, the canyon country on day two, the Sahara desert on days two and three, and the palm valleys and mountain forests on day four heading to Fes.

Day 1 | Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley (5 hours)

You leave Marrakech in the morning and drive through the High Atlas Mountains on the road south. Tizi n’Tichka pass sits at 2,260 metres. The views from the top stretch back across the whole Haouz plain on a clear day.

The road comes down into the pre-Saharan south and the landscape changes completely. The first stop is the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of packed earth towers sitting above a dry riverbed. You walk the full circuit through the old village, past the granary at the top, and back down. Allow about an hour.

After Ait Ben Haddou the road passes through Ouarzazate — Morocco’s film capital. You can stop for lunch or a coffee before continuing east along the Dades River. You arrive at your hotel in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon. Dinner and breakfast included.

320 km  ·  approx. 5 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Dades Valley

Day 2 | Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga → Erg Chebbi (4 hours)

The morning starts in the Dades Gorges. You drive east past the canyon walls and into Todra Gorge where the limestone walls rise to 300 metres and narrow to about 10 metres at the tightest point. Walk the base of the gorge before 11am for the best light.

From Todra the road crosses the flat pre-Saharan plain through Rissani and south to Merzouga. The land flattens out and the horizon opens up in every direction. By late afternoon the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the left.

You reach Merzouga in time for the sunset camel ride into the dunes. The trek takes about 45 minutes. The desert camp is inside the dunes, not next to the road. You spend the night at a luxury camp with a private en-suite tent, hot water, and air conditioning. Dinner at the camp, a fire in the evening, music, and a sky with no light pollution. Breakfast included.

220 km  ·  approx. 4 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Desert camp, Erg Chebbi

Day 3 | Full Day in the Merzouga Desert — 4×4 Excursion

You wake up at the camp and watch the sunrise from the dune ridge before the 4×4 arrives. This is the most memorable day of the whole journey through Morocco.

The guided excursion covers three stops. First is a nomad family living in a traditional tent in the Sahara desert — tea and conversation through your guide. Second is the village of Khamlia about 10 km from Merzouga, home to a community with deep roots in sub-Saharan Africa. The Gnawa music here is loud and rhythmic and unlike anything else on the trip. Third is Dayet Srji — a lake at the edge of the dunes that fills with flamingos in some months and sits flat and quiet in others.

You are back in Merzouga by early afternoon. The overnight stay on night three is at a Merzouga hotel — a proper bed, dinner, and breakfast before the long drive north on day four. Dinner and breakfast included.

approx. 60 km  ·  approx. 3 hrs  ·  Overnight: Merzouga hotel

Day 4 | Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Ifrane → Middle Atlas → Fes (9 hours)

The longest drive of the tour. You leave Merzouga early and head north through Erfoud into the Ziz Valley — a long oasis of palm groves and old kasbahs running through the desert toward Midelt. The contrast between the dry desert and the green valley is sharp.

You stop for lunch in Midelt before the road climbs into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The cedar forests are cool and dense after three days in the desert. Barbary macaques sit in the trees along the roadside near Azrou. You pass through Ifrane — a mountain town at 1,650 metres that looks completely different from any other Moroccan city.

The road comes down from the Middle Atlas and you arrive in Fes in the early evening.

490 km  ·  approx. 9 hours driving  ·  End: Fes

Know Before You Go

The drives

Day one is 320 km and about 5 hours including the Ait Ben Haddou stop. Day two is 220 km and 4 hours. Day three is easy — 60 km in the 4×4 with no long road sections. Day four is the longest at 490 km and around 9 hours from Merzouga to Fes. If you are prone to motion sickness take medication before day one — the Tizi n’Tichka switchbacks are steep in both directions.

The camel trek

The sunset camel trek on day two takes about 45 minutes into the dunes. If you prefer not to ride, a 4×4 transfer to the camp is available at no extra cost. Let us know before day two or on arrival in Merzouga.

The desert camp

The camp is inside the dunes, not next to the road. The tents have a private en-suite bathroom, hot water, and air conditioning. Dinner and breakfast are included. The evening has a fire and live music. You leave the camp by camel or 4×4 on the morning of day three.

Day four — the road to Fes

Day four is the longest drive of the tour. You leave Merzouga early and head north through the Ziz Valley, Midelt, and the Middle Atlas. The cedar forests and the town of Ifrane break up the drive well. You arrive in Fes in the early evening. If you have an early morning flight out of Fes the next day, plan to be at your accommodation by 7pm at the latest.

Best time of year

March to May and October to November are the best months. Desert temperatures at Erg Chebbi sit between 18 and 28°C, the Atlas is green on the way out and the Middle Atlas forests are at their best on day four. July and August work but day four is a long drive in the heat. December and January are cold at the camp at night but the dunes are quiet and uncrowded.

Why Private 4 Days Tour from Marrakech to Fes?

Most Morocco tours on this route run as shared departures. You pay less per person and travel with strangers on a fixed schedule. Over four days that becomes a problem.

A private tour means one vehicle, one group, your itinerary. If you want more time at Ait Ben Haddou, you take it. If someone needs a stop on day four before the long drive to Fes, it happens. Nothing is cut short because a bus full of strangers is ready to move.

Day three in the Merzouga desert is where this matters most. The nomad family visit, Khamlia, and Dayet Srji all run at your pace on a private tour. If the conversation at the nomad tent goes long because it is genuinely interesting, it goes long. On a shared tour that stop has a time limit.

Day four is also worth mentioning. The drive from Merzouga to Fes is nine hours. On a private tour you stop when you want — lunch in the Ziz Valley, a short walk in Ifrane, a coffee in Midelt. On a shared bus those stops are decided for you.

The driver-guide is also a different resource. Over four days you have the same person for every stop and every question. They know this road well and they know where the good lunch stops are on the day four route north.

FAQ — 4 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour

Is this tour private or shared?

Fully private. One vehicle, one group, no strangers. A 4×4 for 2 to 3 people, a minivan for 4 to 8, and a minibus for larger groups. Your driver and guide are the same person for all four days.

What is included in a 4-day tour from Marrakech to Fes?

Private transport, driver-guide, three nights accommodation, all dinners and breakfasts, the sunset camel trek, sandboarding, and the full day 4×4 excursion in the Merzouga desert on day three. Lunches are not included on any of the four days.

How can I plan a 4-day itinerary from Marrakech to Fes?

You do not need to plan anything. The itinerary covers Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley on day one, Todra Gorge and the Erg Chebbi dunes on day two, a full desert day in Merzouga on day three, and the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas drive to Fes on day four. If you want changes — tell us when you enquire and we adjust it.

Which sites are must-see on a 4-day tour from Marrakech to Fes?

Five stops stand out. Ait Ben Haddou on day one is a UNESCO kasbah village that has appeared in more films than most people realise. Todra Gorge on day two is narrow, tall, and cold at the base even in summer. The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are the highest in Morocco. The Ziz Valley on day four is a wide palm oasis cutting through the desert. Ifrane in the Middle Atlas looks like it was built in the wrong country.

How does a desert excursion fit into this tour?

You arrive at the Erg Chebbi dunes at the end of day two for the sunset camel trek and your first night at the desert camp. Day three is entirely in and around Merzouga — nomad family visit, Khamlia village, Dayet Srji lake, and a free afternoon for quad biking or horse riding. You leave the desert on day four heading north to Fes.

What are the accommodation options on a 4-day tour from Marrakech to Fes?

Three nights across three different places. A riad or hotel in the Dades Valley canyon on night one. A luxury desert camp inside the Erg Chebbi dunes on night two — private tent, en-suite bathroom, hot water, air conditioning. A hotel in Merzouga on night three before the long drive to Fes on day four. Standard, mid-range, and premium tiers are available. All include dinner and breakfast.

What is the best way to travel from Marrakech to Fes in 4 days?

A private guided tour is the most straightforward option. The route is 1,090 km across four days and includes mountain passes, canyon roads, and desert tracks. An experienced driver handles all of that without you thinking about navigation or road conditions. Self-driving is possible but you still need a local guide for the day three desert excursion, and mountain road navigation on day one and day four adds stress to what should be a relaxed trip.

How does a guided tour compare to doing this route yourself?

On a guided tour everything is arranged — the driver, the route, the accommodation, the camel trek, and the 4×4 excursion. You arrive, get in the vehicle, and focus on the scenery. On a self-guided trip you handle the rental car, fuel, navigation, booking each stop separately, and finding a local guide for the Merzouga excursion. The total cost often ends up similar. The experience is not.

Can I customise this tour?

Yes. A night in Ouarzazate on day one is the most common addition. Some groups prefer two nights at the desert camp instead of one at the camp and one at the Merzouga hotel. Departure times are flexible. Tell us what you want and we will build the itinerary around it.

What is the best time of year?

March to May and October to November give you the best combination of weather, light, and crowd levels across all four days. Summer works but day four to Fes is a long drive in serious heat. Winter is cold at the desert camp at night but the dunes are at their quietest.
