Tour Overview — Morocco 10 Day Itinerary

This carefully designed 10-day Morocco itinerary starts and ends in Marrakech and covers the best of Morocco in one complete loop. Ten days in Morocco is enough time to see the imperial cities, cross the High Atlas Mountains, sleep in the Sahara desert, walk the blue streets of Chefchaouen, and return to Marrakech without rushing any of it.

The route goes south on day three into the desert, north through Fes and Chefchaouen on days six through eight, west along the Atlantic coast through Rabat and Casablanca on days nine and ten, and back to Marrakech for departure. Every day brings a different landscape. The diverse landscapes of this trip to Morocco — canyon country, golden dunes, mountain cedar forests, blue medinas, and Atlantic coastline — are what make the 10 day trip genuinely unlike any single-region tour.

This Morocco itinerary 10 days works for first-time visitors who want the full picture of the country and for travellers who want a personalized itinerary that covers both the well-known destinations and the roads between them. The route is private, fully guided, and adjustable to your travel dates.

Morocco 10 Day Itinerary | Day by Day

This carefully designed 10-day Morocco itinerary covers every region of the country in one well-paced loop. The itinerary was well-paced to give you two full days in Marrakech, two nights in the desert, two days to explore Morocco's imperial cities, and a coastal return through Rabat and Casablanca. No day feels wasted and no destination is rushed.

Day 1 | Arrive in Marrakech — Free Evening

You arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport and transfer to your riad in the medina. Most visitors to Morocco enter Morocco visa-free — check your passport nationality before travel.

Day one has no schedule. Leave your bags and walk out into the streets of Marrakech. Head toward Jemaa el-Fna Square as the afternoon light drops. The square transforms completely after dark — food stalls, musicians, henna artists, and smoke from a hundred grills. It is one of Morocco's great first impressions and the best introduction to the vibrant cities of the country. Have dinner in the square or on one of the terrace restaurants above it.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 2 | Marrakech Guided City Tour

A licensed local guide meets you at your riad in the morning for a full day exploring the cultural highlights of Marrakech.

The tour starts in the vibrant souks — spice market, leather souk, lamp makers, carpet merchants, textile alleyways. The guide keeps you oriented and explains what you are looking at. From the souks the tour moves to Bahia Palace — 19th century rooms decorated with painted cedar ceilings and zellij tilework. Then Ben Youssef Medersa — the finest example of Moroccan craftsmanship in the city, with carved stucco and a central courtyard that stops most visitors in their tracks.

After lunch, the afternoon is for Saadian Tombs and Majorelle Garden. Book Majorelle Garden tickets online before you arrive — it sells out regularly. The garden is quiet and geometric and completely different from the medina. The YSL Museum next door is worth an hour if you have interest in fashion history.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 3 | Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley (5 hours)

You leave Marrakech early and head south into the High Atlas Mountains. This is one of the great drives in southern Morocco — the road climbs to Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres and the views back toward Marrakech across the Haouz plain are panoramic on a clear morning.

The descent brings you into the pre-Saharan south. The first stop is Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of packed earth towers that has appeared in Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and Lawrence of Arabia. Walk the full circuit through the ksar, up to the granary at the top, and back down. Allow about an hour.

After Ait Ben Haddou the road continues east through Ouarzazate — the gateway to the desert — and along the Dades River into the canyon. You arrive at your hotel in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon. Canyon views, dinner and breakfast included.

320 km  ·  approx. 5 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Dades Valley

Day 4 | Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga — Sunset Camel Trek (4 hours)

The morning starts in the canyon. Drive east into Todra Gorge — 300-metre limestone walls narrowing to about 10 metres at the tightest point. Walk the base before 11am for the best light.

From Todra the road crosses the flat pre-Saharan plain south to Merzouga. This is the heart of the Sahara desert — the landscape empties out completely and the horizon stretches in every direction. By late afternoon the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the left.

You reach Merzouga in time for the sunset camel ride into the dunes — about 45 minutes into the heart of the Sahara. The luxury desert camp is inside the dunes with private tents, hot water, and air conditioning. Dinner at the camp, a fire in the evening, live music, and a sky with no light pollution. This is the authentic Moroccan desert experience that makes the whole trip worth it.

220 km  ·  approx. 4 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Luxury desert camp, Erg Chebbi

Day 5 | Full Day in the Merzouga Desert — 4x4 Excursion

You wake up at the desert camp and watch the sunrise from the dune ridge. This is the most memorable day of the entire adventure — a full day to explore the desert without a long drive ahead.

The guided 4x4 excursion covers three stops. First is a nomad family living in a traditional tent in the Sahara — tea and conversation through your guide. Second is Khamlia village, home to a community with deep roots in sub-Saharan Africa and one of Morocco's most distinctive Gnawa music traditions. Third is Dayet Srji — a lake at the edge of the dunes that holds flamingos in some months and sits flat and silent in others.

You are back in Merzouga by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure — quad biking, horse riding, or sitting in the shade. A second chance to stay in a luxury desert setting before the long drive north tomorrow.

approx. 60 km  ·  approx. 3 hrs  ·  Overnight: Merzouga hotel

Day 6 | Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Middle Atlas → Fes (9 hours)

The longest travel day of the itinerary. You leave Merzouga early and head north through Erfoud into the Ziz Valley — a long date palm oasis running through the desert toward Midelt. The contrast between the desert and the green valley is one of the most striking visual shifts on the whole trip.

From the Ziz Valley the road climbs into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Cedar forests, Barbary macaques in the trees, and the town of Ifrane at 1,650 metres — a mountain town that looks like it was built in the wrong country.

You arrive in Fes in the early evening. The city is one of Morocco's great imperial cities and the medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight in a riad inside the medina.

490 km  ·  approx. 9 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Fes

Day 7 | Fes Guided Medina Tour

A licensed local guide meets you at your riad for a full day in one of the most complex and rewarding cities in Africa.

The Fes medina has over 9,000 alleyways and no cars. The guide takes you through the leather souk, the spice market, Al-Qarawiyyin University — one of the oldest universities in the world — and the Bou Inania Medersa. The tanneries are the centrepiece of the day — viewed from the leather shop terraces above, with a sprig of mint offered at the entrance because the smell from the tanning pits below is strong and distinctive.

The afternoon is free for the mellah — the historic Jewish quarter — and the Andalusian quarter across the river. Fes rewards those who explore Morocco's vibrant cities slowly. Two nights here would be better if your schedule allows.

Overnight: Fes

Day 8 | Fes → Chefchaouen (3 hours)

A short drive northwest into the Rif Mountains brings you to Chefchaouen — the blue city. The medina here is painted in shades of blue and white and is one of the most photographed destinations in Morocco.

Spend the day walking the blue alleyways, sitting in the central square with a mint tea, and climbing to the Spanish mosque above the town for panoramic views over the rooftops and the Rif Mountains beyond. The light in Chefchaouen is best in the early morning and late afternoon.

This is the quietest and most atmospheric day of the whole itinerary — a deliberate change of pace after the desert and the intensity of Fes.

approx. 190 km  ·  approx. 3 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Chefchaouen

Day 9 | Chefchaouen → Rabat (3 hours)

You leave the blue city and head south along the Atlantic coast to Rabat — Morocco's capital and one of its most underrated cities.

The afternoon in Rabat covers the Hassan Tower — an unfinished 12th century minaret that would have been the tallest in the world — the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the compact medina and kasbah along the river. Rabat is quieter than Casablanca and more manageable for a single afternoon.

approx. 210 km  ·  approx. 3 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Rabat or Casablanca

Day 10 | Casablanca → Marrakech (3.5 hours)

The final day starts in Casablanca — Morocco's largest city and commercial capital. The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is the main stop — one of the largest mosques in the world, built over the Atlantic with a retractable roof and a location directly on the seafront. Morning guided tours run until midday.

After the mosque, the drive south on the motorway back to Marrakech takes about 3.5 hours. You arrive back in the city of Marrakech in the early afternoon — in time for a final walk through the medina, a last hammam, or a flight home.

This day Morocco itinerary from Casablanca back to Marrakech closes the loop cleanly. You end where you started, having covered every major region of the country.

approx. 240 km  ·  approx. 3.5 hours driving  ·  End: Marrakech

Good to Know Before You Go

The long driving days

Day six from Merzouga to Fes is approximately 490 km and 9 hours. Day ten from Casablanca to Marrakech is around 240 km and 3 hours. All other days are under 5 hours driving. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication before day three for the Tizi n'Tichka switchbacks.

Entry fees

Several stops charge entry. Budget roughly: Majorelle Garden 150 MAD, Bahia Palace 70 MAD, Saadian Tombs 70 MAD, Ait Ben Haddou 10 MAD, Fes tanneries via leather shops (free with soft drink). Majorelle Garden sells out — book online at least two days in advance.

Cash

Moroccan Dirhams only. Withdraw at Marrakech Menara Airport on arrival. ATMs are available throughout the cities but limited at the desert camp and in smaller towns. Bring enough cash for 10 days of lunches and tips before day three.

Chefchaouen

The blue medina is best explored on foot. Shoes with grip are useful — the alleyways are steep and the blue paint on the steps can be slippery after rain. The best light for photography is early morning before 9am.

Fes medina

The Fes medina is the most complex urban environment on this trip. Do not separate from your local guide on day seven. The tanneries are best viewed from the leather shop terraces above — the shops will offer you a sprig of mint on arrival because the smell from the tanning pits is strong.

Desert camp night

Leave your main bag in the vehicle on night four. Take a small daypack to the desert camp — sunscreen SPF 50, sunglasses, light scarf for the dunes, power bank, one change of clothes. The camp provides everything else.

Casablanca to the blue city and back

The drive from Casablanca to Chefchaouen on another itinerary takes around 4 hours. On this route you go Chefchaouen to Rabat to Casablanca in sequence — a logical coastal loop that avoids any backtracking.

Why Book Your Itinerary With Us?

Most group tours in Morocco run on fixed schedules with shared vehicles. You pay less per person and spend your days waiting for other passengers to be ready. Over ten days that arrangement becomes increasingly frustrating.

This is a private tour with one vehicle, one guide, and an itinerary that fits your group. If you want an extra hour at Ait Ben Haddou on day three, you take it. If the day seven tanneries tour runs long because your group wants to understand what they are seeing, it runs long. The local guides in Marrakech and Fes are licensed and experienced — the kind of knowledge that comes from living in these cities, not from a script.

The desert camps are pre-selected at each tier. The vehicles are modern and air-conditioned. The route has been refined over years of running this trip. You are not booking a package with a call centre — you are booking with a tour operator who knows every stop on this route personally.

For two travellers the per-person cost of this private Morocco tour is close to what reputable group tours charge. For three or more it is cheaper per person. The experience is not comparable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ten Days in Morocco

What is the recommended amount of time to spend in Morocco visiting Marrakech, Fes, and the Sahara?

Ten days is the minimum comfortable duration for this combination. Two nights in Marrakech, one night in the Dades Valley, two nights in the desert (camp and hotel), two nights in Fes, one night in Chefchaouen, and one night on the Atlantic coast. This itinerary covers all three without rushing any of them. Fes and Marrakech both deserve a full day each — the medinas are large and complex and a half-day in either city is not enough.

What is the best 10-day itinerary for travelling in Morocco?

The route on this page — Marrakech, High Atlas, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, Merzouga desert, Fes, Chefchaouen, Atlantic coast, back to Marrakech — is the most complete version of Morocco in 10 days. It covers the imperial cities, the Sahara, the mountains, and the coast in one loop without repeating a road. For travellers who want more time in cities and less driving, a 12 days version adds a night in Meknes and a longer stay in Fes.

How can I efficiently combine Marrakech, Fes, and the Sahara Desert in a 10-day itinerary?

The key is to travel in one direction rather than back and forth. This itinerary goes south from Marrakech to the desert, then north to Fes, then west to the coast, then south back to Marrakech. No destination is visited twice and no road is repeated. The only long driving day is day six from Merzouga to Fes — 490 km and 9 hours — which is unavoidable on any route that covers both cities and the desert. Every other day is under 5 hours.

How can I balance cultural, adventure, and relaxation on a 10-day Morocco itinerary?

This itinerary alternates deliberately between the three. Days one and two are cultural — Marrakech medina, palaces, souks. Days three and four shift to landscape and adventure — Atlas crossing, canyon walk, camel trek, desert camp. Day five is the most relaxed — a full day in the desert with no driving. Days six and seven return to cultural immersion in Fes. Day eight is a quieter, atmospheric day in Chefchaouen. Days nine and ten are coastal and transitional. The day of exploration in the desert on day five is the natural midpoint rest before the second half of the trip.

Should I hire a guide or travel independently for a 10-day Morocco itinerary?

A private guided tour is strongly recommended for this route. The driving distances between destinations are long and the road conditions vary significantly. The Fes and Marrakech medinas are genuinely difficult to navigate without a licensed local guide. The desert camp and camel trek require local coordination that is easier to book as part of a tour than independently. Independent travel in Morocco is possible but the time spent planning and navigating takes away from the actual travel experience. A private tour handles logistics so you can enjoy every moment. Many travellers who attempt this route independently end up wishing they had booked a guided tour from the start.
