Marrakech Desert Tour 4 Days — Overview

Four days is the right amount of time for this Morocco tour. You are not rushing through anything and no single day feels like a transfer.

On the first day of your tour you leave Marrakech heading south on the road that climbs into the High Atlas. Tizi n’Tichka pass sits at 2,260 metres — the route from Marrakech to the Sahara desert starts here. Day two heads east through Todra Gorge, crosses the pre-Saharan plain, and reaches Merzouga in time for the sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi. Night two is at the desert camp inside the dunes. Day three stays in the desert — a full guided 4×4 excursion covering a nomad family visit, Khamlia village, and Dayet Srji lake, then a second night in Merzouga at a hotel. Day four is the return to Marrakech via the Draa Valley palmeries and Ouarzazate.

Three nights, four landscapes, one continuous loop — this is the Merzouga desert tour that covers the full south in one clean route.

  • Night three at a Merzouga hotel — dinner and breakfast included

4 Days Tour Marrakech to Merzouga Desert — Day by Day

This 4 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga covers four distinct landscapes. The Atlas on day one, the canyon country on day two, the Sahara on nights two and three, and the palmery valleys on the way back.

Day 1 | Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley (5 hours)

You leave Marrakech in the morning and head south on the road that climbs into the High Atlas. Tizi n’Tichka pass sits at 2,260 metres. The air is cooler up here and the view back toward Marrakech on a clear day covers the whole Haouz plain.

The road descends and the landscape changes fast. The green of the Atlas gives way to red rock and dry riverbeds. The first stop is Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO-listed ksar of packed earth towers. You walk the full circuit through the village, up to the granary at the top, and back down. Allow about an hour.

After Ait Ben Haddou the road continues through Ouarzazate and east along the Dadès River into the canyon. You arrive at your Dades Valley hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner and breakfast included.

320 km  ·  approx. 5 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Dades Valley

Day 2 | Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga Sahara Desert (4 hours)

The morning starts in the canyon. The drive east takes you into Todra Gorge — limestone walls rising to 300 metres and narrowing to about 10 metres at the tightest point. Walk the base of the gorge before 11am for the best light.

From Todra the road crosses the flat pre-Saharan plain toward Erfoud then south to Merzouga. By late afternoon the first Erg Chebbi dunes appear on the left — orange against the pale desert floor. Merzouga is the gate of the desert.

You reach Merzouga in time for the sunset camel trek. The ride into the dunes takes about 45 minutes. The camp is inside the dunes, not on the road edge. Dinner, fire, music, and a starry desert sky with no light pollution. Breakfast included.

220 km  ·  approx. 4 hours driving  ·  Overnight: Desert camp, Erg Chebbi

Day 3 | Full Day in the Merzouga Desert — 4×4 Excursion

You wake up at the camp and watch the sunrise from the dune ridge before the 4×4 arrives to take you back to Merzouga village. Day three is your full day in the Sahara.

The guided excursion covers three stops. First is a nomad family living in a traditional tent — tea and conversation through your guide. Second is Khamlia village, about 10 km from Merzouga, home to a community descended from sub-Saharan Africa. The Gnawa music here is loud, rhythmic, and unlike anything else on the trip. Third is Dayet Srji — a lake at the edge of the dunes that holds water and flamingos in some months and is flat and silent in others.

Back in Merzouga by early afternoon. The rest of the day is yours — quad biking, horse riding, or sitting in the shade. Night three is at a Merzouga hotel. Dinner and breakfast included.

approx. 60 km  ·  approx. 3 hrs  ·  Overnight: Merzouga hotel

Day 4 | Merzouga → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Marrakech (9 hours)

The longest drive of the tour. Day four is the way back to Marrakech via the Draa Valley. You leave Merzouga in the morning and head west through Morocco’s longest valley — lined with date palm oases and the ochre walls of old kasbahs — then through Ouarzazate and back over Tizi n’Tichka.

You arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel. If you plan to visit Majorelle Garden or the YSL Museum during your stay, book tickets online in advance.

approx. 580 km  ·  approx. 9 hrs driving  ·  End: Marrakech

Good to Know — 4 Days Trip from Marrakech to Merzouga Desert

What to pack

A medium rolling case works for the hotel nights. For the desert camp on night two, pull out a small daypack — sunscreen SPF 50 minimum, sunglasses, a light scarf, power bank, and one change of clothes. Leave the main case in the vehicle.

Bring cash in dirhams for four days of lunches and tips. No ATMs at the camp and limited options in Merzouga town.

What to wear

The Dades Valley sits at around 1,500 metres — nights are cooler than Marrakech, especially October to March. One warm layer covers both canyon nights and the camp evening. Long sleeves in the dunes handle sun and wind better than short sleeves. Closed shoes are more practical for Todra Gorge and the camel trek.

The drives — what to expect

Day one is 320 km and about 5 hours including the Ait Ben Haddou stop. Day two is 220 km and 4 hours. Day three is easy — 60 km in the 4×4. Day four is the hardest at 580 km and around 9 hours back to Marrakech. Take motion sickness medication before day one and day four — both involve the Tizi n’Tichka switchbacks.

The camel trek

The sunset trek on day two takes around 45 minutes into the dunes. If you prefer not to ride, a 4×4 transfer to the camp is available at no extra cost — let us know before day two or on arrival in Merzouga.

Dietary requirements

Tell us at booking if you are vegetarian, vegan, or have allergies. The Dades Valley hotel, the desert camp, and the Merzouga hotel will all prepare accordingly.

Best time of year

March to May and October to November are the strongest months. The Atlas carries snow in spring, the Dades Valley is green, and desert temperatures at Erg Chebbi sit between 18 and 28°C. October is quieter and cooler. Summer works but day four is a long drive in July or August heat.

Why Book a Private Marrakech Desert Tour 4 Days?

Most desert tours on this route run as shared group departures. You pay less per person and travel with strangers on a fixed schedule. Over four days that arrangement shows its limits quickly.

A private Marrakech desert tour means one vehicle, one group, one itinerary. If you want an extra thirty minutes at Todra Gorge, you take it. Nothing waits for anyone else and nothing is cut short because another group is ready to move.

Day three is where this matters most. A shared tour runs the nomad visit, Khamlia, and Dayet Srji on a schedule. A private tour runs them at the pace of your group.

For two people the per-person cost of a private tour is close to what a reputable shared tour charges. For three or more it is cheaper per person than most shared options.

Optional Activities

Ourika Valley or Imlil +

During the Tour
Quad Biking at Erg Chebbi +

The free afternoon on day three is a good time for quad biking. Sessions run about one hour across the outer dunes. Arrange through the hotel the night before.

Horse Riding in the Desert +

Late afternoon on day three — temperature drops after 4pm and the light is better. Arrange through the Merzouga hotel on arrival.

After the Tour
Hot Air Balloon over Marrakech +

The morning after you return. The balloon goes up before dawn over the Haouz plain. You see the Atlas from above — a different view from the one you had driving through it. About one hour. Book in advance.

Hammam and Spa +

After four days on the road a hammam is the right way to finish. A traditional medina hammam costs $4 to $8. A luxury spa version runs $40 to $80.

Moroccan Cooking Class +

Souk visit for ingredients, cook a tagine, pastilla, and salads — you eat what you make. Around $50 to $70 per person. Book ahead.
