5 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech

The first day of your tour leaves Marrakech in the morning heading south into the High Atlas Mountains. Tizi n’Tichka pass sits at 2,260 metres. The views from the top stretch back across the Haouz plain toward Marrakech on a clear day.

The road comes down into the pre-Saharan south and the landscape shifts fast. Red rock and dry riverbeds replace the green of the Atlas. The first stop is Ait Ben Haddou – a UNESCO-listed ksar of packed earth towers that has stood for centuries and appeared in more films than most people realise. You walk the full circuit through the village, up to the granary at the top, and back down. Allow about an hour.

After Ait Ben Haddou the road continues east along the Dades River into the canyon. You arrive at your Dades Valley hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner and breakfast included.

The morning starts in the canyon. You drive east into Todra Gorge – limestone walls rising to 300 metres and narrowing to about 10 metres at the tightest point. Walk the base before 11am for the best light.

From Todra the road crosses the flat pre-Saharan plain toward Erfoud and south to Merzouga – the gate of the desert. By late afternoon the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear. This is the Marrakech to Erg Chebbi stretch that most people come for.

You reach Merzouga in time for the sunset camel trek. The camel ride into the dunes takes about 45 minutes. The luxury desert camp is inside the dunes, not on the road edge. Every tent is equipped with a private bathroom, hot water, and air conditioning. Dinner at the camp, a fire in the evening, music, and a sky with no light pollution. Breakfast included.

You wake up at the luxury camp and watch the sunrise from the dune ridge before the 4×4 arrives. This is the best desert experience of the whole tour – a full day to explore the desert without any driving to Marrakech ahead of you.

The guided excursion covers three stops. First is a nomad family living in a traditional tent in the Sahara – tea and conversation through your private guide. Second is Khamlia village, about 10 km from Merzouga, home to a community descended from sub-Saharan Africa. The Gnawa music here is loud and rhythmic and unlike anything else on the trip. Third is Dayet Srji – a lake at the edge of the dunes that holds water and flamingos in some months and is flat and silent in others.

You are back in Merzouga by early afternoon with the rest of the day free – quad biking, horse riding, or sitting in the shade. Night three is at a Merzouga hotel. Dinner and breakfast included.

You leave the desert in the morning and head west through the Draa Valley – Morocco’s longest valley, lined with date palm oases and the ochre walls of old kasbahs. This is southern Morocco at its most cinematic and it gets its own full day on this tour rather than being rushed through on a long return drive.

You arrive in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon. The city sits at the edge of the Sahara and the Atlas and has been the base for dozens of major film productions – the Hollywood of Morocco in every sense. Dinner and breakfast included at your Ouarzazate hotel.

The shortest drive of the tour. You leave Ouarzazate in the morning and take the road north over Tizi n’Tichka back into Marrakech. The pass looks completely different from the south side – the descent into the Haouz plain on the northern slope gives a long, slow view of Marrakech appearing below.

You arrive back in the city by midday or early afternoon – plenty of time to check into your accommodation in Marrakech, explore the medina, or catch an afternoon flight.

Five days across four overnight locations including a night in the desert. A medium rolling case works for the three hotel and riad nights. For the desert camp on night two, pull out a small daypack – sunscreen SPF 50, sunglasses, a light scarf for the dunes, power bank, and one change of clothes. Leave the main case in the vehicle at camp. You have it back on day three morning.

The Dades Valley sits at around 1,500 metres and nights are noticeably cooler than Marrakech, particularly between October and March. One warm layer covers the canyon evenings and the camp night. In the dunes a long-sleeve shirt handles sun and wind better than short sleeves. Closed shoes are more practical than sandals for Todra Gorge and the evening camel trek. Long trousers are more comfortable than shorts on the camel saddle over 45 minutes.

Day one from Marrakech to the Dades Valley is around 320 km and 5 hours including the Ait Ben Haddou walk. Day two to Merzouga via Todra Gorge is around 220 km and 4 hours. Day three is a short local 4×4 excursion – around 60 km. Day four through the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate is around 310 km and 5 hours. Day five back to Marrakech is 200 km and 3 hours – the easiest drive of the tour.

The motion sickness risk is on day one going up Tizi n’Tichka and on day five coming back down the northern side. Take medication before both if needed.

The camel trek on the evening of day two takes around 45 minutes into the dunes. A Berber guide leads on foot throughout. The camp is reached from the dune side rather than from the road. If the camel ride is not for you, a 4×4 transfer to camp is available at no extra cost – let us know before day two or on arrival in Merzouga village.

The camp is inside the dunes, not next to the road. Every tent has a private bathroom, hot water, and air conditioning. Dinner and breakfast are included. In the evening there is a fire and music. The sky at night has no light pollution. You leave the camp on the morning of day three by 4×4 for the full desert excursion.

Day three is what sets this tour apart from the 3-day and 4-day versions. A full guided 4×4 excursion covers a nomad family in a traditional tent (tea, conversation through your guide), Khamlia village with its live Gnawa music, and Dayet Srji lake at the dune edge. You are back in Merzouga by early afternoon with the rest of the day free. Quad biking (1 hour minimum) and horse riding can be arranged through the hotel on arrival the night before.

Tell us at booking if you are vegetarian, vegan, or have allergies. The Dades Valley hotel, the desert camp kitchen, the Merzouga hotel, and the Ouarzazate hotel will all prepare accordingly. For lunches on the road, most stops have options for most diets.

March to May and October to November are the strongest months. Desert temperatures at Erg Chebbi sit between 18 and 28°C and the Atlas crossing is at its most photogenic. Summer works but the Draa Valley and Merzouga both reach 40°C in July and August – an early departure on day four helps. December to February is cold at the camp at night but the dunes are uncrowded and the light is excellent.

If you plan to visit Majorelle Garden in Marrakech before or after the tour, book your timed entry ticket online in advance. Walk-in tickets are not available. The garden fills quickly during spring and autumn peak months.
