Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour 4 Days

You leave Fes early — 7am at the latest — and head south via the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road passes through Ifrane at 1,650 metres and through the cedar forest around Azrou where Barbary macaques sit in the trees along the roadside. This is Berber country — small villages dot the hillsides and the landscape is completely different from the Sahara you are heading toward.

The Middle Atlas gives way to the pre-Saharan south. The Ziz Valley appears — a long palm trees oasis lined with old kasbahs cutting through the desert toward Erfoud. The contrast between the cedar forest above and the desert palms below is one of the most striking shifts in Moroccan landscape.

You reach the Merzouga desert in the late afternoon. The sunset camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes takes about 45 minutes. The luxury desert camp is inside the dunes — private tent, en-suite bathroom, hot water, air conditioning. Dinner at the camp, a fire, live Gnawa music, and a completely dark sky. You wake up at the desert camp and watch the sunrise from the dune ridge. This is the day the 4-day tour earns its place over the 3-day — a full day in the desert with no long drive ahead and time in the Sahara that actually feels unhurried.

The guided 4x4 excursion covers three stops. First is a nomad family living in a traditional Berber tent in the Moroccan Sahara desert — tea and conversation through your driver-guide. Second is Khamlia village, about 10 km from Merzouga, home to a community with roots in sub-Saharan Africa and one of the most distinctive Gnawa music traditions in Morocco. Third is Dayet Srji — a lake at the edge of the dunes that fills with flamingos in some months and sits flat and silent in others.

You are back in Merzouga by early afternoon for a free afternoon — quad biking, horse riding, or sitting in the shade. Night two is at a Merzouga riad or hotel. Dinner and breakfast included.

You leave the Erg Chebbi dunes in the morning and head west. The road crosses the flat pre-Saharan plain to Todra Gorge — one of the most dramatic gorge landscapes in Morocco. Limestone walls rise to 300 metres and narrow to about 10 metres at the tightest point. Walk the base before 11am for the best light.

After Todra the road continues west through the Dades canyon. Old kasbahs cling to the cliff sides and the Dades river runs through the canyon floor below. The red rock walls close in and the landscape shifts dramatically from the open desert behind you.

You arrive at your riad or hotel in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon. Dinner and breakfast included.

The final day of this road trip from Fes to Marrakech. You leave the Dades Valley in the morning and head west through the Valley of Roses and into Ouarzazate — Morocco's film capital at the edge of the Sahara and the Atlas.

The main stop on the final day is Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage site of packed earth towers and kasbahs sitting above a dry riverbed. Appearing in Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and dozens of other productions, it is one of the most iconic stops on the route. Your driver-guide leads the full walk — up past the old Berber houses, through the narrow lanes, and to the granary at the top. No entry fee required. Allow about one hour.

After Ait Ben Haddou the road climbs north through the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n'Tichka at 2,260 metres. The views from the top are panoramic. Arriving in Marrakech happens in the late afternoon — the Fes to Marrakech journey will come to a natural close as the city appears across the Haouz plain. The travel from Fes to Marrakech via the desert means day one covers 490 km and 9 hours. Leave Fes by 7am at the latest to reach the Erg Chebbi dunes in time for the sunset camel ride. The Middle Atlas section moves fast and the Ziz Valley is worth a short stop. The pre-Saharan plain south of Erfoud is long and flat — but the dunes appear on the left and the wait is worth it.

The sunset camel ride on day one takes about 45 minutes into the dunes. If you prefer not to ride a camel, a 4x4 transfer to the desert camp is available at no extra cost. Let your tour guides know before arrival in Merzouga.

Night one is at the Sahara desert camp inside the Erg Chebbi dunes. If you want to spend two desert nights at the camp rather than one at the camp and one at the riad, tell us when you book. The camp tents have hot water, air conditioning, and a private bathroom.

Your driver-guide leads the walk through Ait Ben Haddou on day four. No entry fee required. The walk takes about one hour. Go early — it is quieter before the day-trip groups arrive from Marrakech.

The pass sits at 2,260 metres. The switchbacks on both sides are long. Take motion sickness medication before day four if you are sensitive to winding mountain roads.

Bring enough dirhams for four days of lunches and tips before leaving Fes. ATMs are available in Fes but limited at the desert camp and in smaller towns along the route.

Merzouga is the best desert experience in Morocco by a clear margin. Agafay is a rocky plateau 30 km from Marrakech — no real dunes, no Sahara, good for a day trip but not a genuine desert adventure. Zagora has dunes but they are smaller than Erg Chebbi and the drive from Fes does not pass through the same canyon country and kasbahs. Merzouga sits at the edge of Morocco's Sahara with the highest dunes in the country — the camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset is genuinely unlike anything else on any Morocco tour route.
